Full-Time Registered Nurse on Premises
The Ken-Ton School District provides a full-time registered nurse on premises five days a week at St. John’s. Our school nurse partners with families to keep children healthy, safe and ready to learn. They manage medications, provide health education and conduct screenings so students can focus on learning.

Physical Examinations
All new students entering St. John’s must present a physical exam performed within the last 12 months from the first day of school.
Students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, Third, Fifth and Seventh Grades need an updated physical exam presented to the school within 30 days of entering. The updated exam is considered valid if it was performed within the previous 12 months of the current school year’s start.
Physicals may be faxed, emailed or dropped off at the health office
Immunizations
All children must be age-appropriately immunized to attend school in New York state. Additional
immunizations are required for specific age groups (Pre-K, Kindergarten, Sixth and Seventh grades). Check with your health care provider or the health office for specifics.
Administration of Medications
All medications require:
- A written order from your Health Care Provider is required for ALL medication, both prescription and over-the- counter (Ex. Tylenol, Advil).
- A written request from the parent is required.
- The medication must be brought to school in a container appropriately labeled by the pharmacy.
- Any exceptions (i.e. asthma inhalers that a student may self-carry) must be specifically stated by the physician on the written form.
Questions? Don’t hesitate to call. We’re here to help keep your child healthy and in school.
When to Keep Your Child Home
Please keep your child home from school if they have any of the following symptoms:
- A fever of 100 degrees or higher within the past 24 hours. Your child must be fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
- Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours
- A rash of unknown cause
- Persistent cough, runny nose, congestion, fatigue or body aches not related to allergies
- Red, itchy or discharge from the eyes with crusting not related to allergies
- Strep throat. Children with strep throat must receive antibiotic treatment for 24 hours before returning to school.
- Weeping cold sores or other lesions such as impetigo until they are under medical treatment
These guidelines help protect all students and staff from communicable diseases.
Communicable Diseases
If your child becomes ill with a communicable disease or condition, you are asked to notify the Health Office as soon as possible.
Allergies
Some of our students have severe, life-threatening allergies to nuts and dairy. Please keep this in mind when sending snacks or birthday treats to school, and follow any directives of the teacher.
Illness During the School Day
If your child feels unwell, the principal or the Health Office may ask them to go home. If we call you to pick up your child, please try to do so within an hour so they can rest and recover comfortably at home.
If your child comes to school showing signs of a contagious illness—like strep throat, pink eye, or an unexplained rash—and doesn’t have a doctor’s note, we’ll ask that they go home. Your child can return once a doctor has confirmed or ruled out the illness and provided a note. This helps keep all of our students healthy. We appreciate your help in keeping our school community safe and well.
Screening Programs
During the year, a screening for vision and hearing will be conducted only for students in grades designated by the NYS School Health Services. Parents will be notified if further examination by a specialist is indicated.
Injuries Outside of School
If your child is injured outside of school, please notify the school and the health office. Any student with a documented injury must have clearance from a doctor before returning to physical education, sports or recess.
For a short-term excuse from physical education (one to two days), please send a note with your child. For an absence longer than two days, a doctor’s note is required.
Please note: The school nurse cannot excuse students from physical education independently.
