Teacher's Name: Mrs. Michelle Norris
Grade/Subject: Third Grade
From Mrs. Norris's 3rd Grade
Religion: We are learning about the marks of the church, and are beginning to prepare for First Communion.
Reading: We are having a lot of fun reading Mr. Popper's Penguins. We are keeping our own Penguin Journals, and are going to be incorporating a STEM activity. Please note that on 2/8, your child will be coming home with the directions for their book report and diorama. The book report and diorama will be due on February 25, 2019.
Math: This trimester is focused on understanding and applying our understanding of Multiplication and Division. Now is a good time to start thinking about having some flash cards on hand to begin memorizing these basic facts.
Social Studies and Science: Wow! We have a lot of future astronomers on our hands! We got very into learning about our Solar System. We are now going to start learning about Communities and Geography in Social Studies.
English: I hope you enjoyed reading your child's personal narrative! These narratives will be filed in their writing folders. We are currently using a sequencing chart to begin writing an expository piece. We have had our first writing conference, and boy, do we have some great topics! We are also going to begin studying Verbs!
***Homework: I recently read this article on supporting children at home with homework. I found it quite interesting, so I thought I would share. As the year progresses, I am going to release more responsibility onto the students with regard to writing in their planners each day, and packing all necessary books, folders etc. to go home in the afternoon. As always, homework is meant to review/reinforce concepts at home, and establishing solid work/study routines. I aim to give a reasonable amount of homework each day, and to spread out testing as much as possible. As per the third grade policy, students missing 4 homework assignments will be assigned an after school detention. That said, I know there are days when there might be a family emergency that precludes homework. If this is the case, please just write me a note. Thanks for all of the at-home support! Happy reading!
